This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Arrowtown.

 Main street

Arrowtown, a litle town that is worth a visit, is situated in the South Island of New Zealand, in the Otago region (really near Queenstown -- thirty minutes distance by car). This picturesque town has a history that takes you back to the gold mining rush in New Zealand. The town was built in the nineteenth century in the banks of the Arrow River and had an amazing growth. Some towns nearby started to develop, but after the end of the gold rush none survived with the exception of Arrowtown -- all the others became ghost towns. You'll find Arrowtown to be frozen in time -- the buildings, the small gardens, the streets, and the river all still have the appearance of an old town from two centuries ago. Don't miss the impressive Lakes District Museum. Another don't-miss place in town is the extraordinary bakery that you'll find at the end of the main road -- they have the best caramel tart you'll ever eat, as well as some even better things for you to take a bite!

It's easy to get to Arrowtown by bus -- there are a lot of touristic bus companies that stop here, or you can check the regional link bus, but the easiest way should be driving your own car. Arrowtown is the perfect overnight stop for your trip, before getting into busy Queenstown. You'll find a friendly, remote place here. As you can imagine, there aren't many hostels in Arrowtown, but what you will get out of staying in an Arrowtown hostel is the community spirit, getting in touch with the locals. Enjoy the simplicity of Arrowtown and immerse yourself into the late nineteenth century.
