This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Almuñécar.

Almuñécar is a seaside town in the province of Granada, Andalusia. Like many towns and cities in Southern Spain and Andalusia, Almuñécar has a long history with the Phoenicians, Romans, and the Arabs. The name of Almuñécar is in itself Arabic in origin and comes from the word al-Munakkab or “the shoulder.”

Almuñécar is one of the seaside towns that see the bend of Mediterranean Sea. Because of its position, Almuñécar has been an important port and strategic location for the ancient people. During the eighth century BC, Almuñécar was a Phoenician colony called Ex or Sexi. In those times, the main industry was fishing, salting, and preserving fish. Almuñécar grew and expanded with the arrival of the Romans in the second century BC. The influence of Romans is still evident in the structural remains of Almuñécar. The Romans left various structures that still stand today, like the famous Roman aqueducts and fortifications.

For a long time, Almuñécar has lived off with its fishing industry, until the middle of the twentieth century saw the rise of tourism. Most of the tourists are keen on exploring, visiting, and sightseeing the legacy that the past has left in Almuñécar. Tourist attractions include the excavated Phoenician ruins, the old fish and salting factory, the Roman aqueducts, the fortification of Castle of San Miguel, and the old streets and district of the old town. The town is still colored with the ancient and quiet life of the past. Arabic, Phoenician, Roman, Gothic, and Christian influences are apparent in the buildings and alleyways. Seaside tourism is also the center of interests in Almuñécar. Though fishing, boating, and sailing are still activities to look for in Almuñécar, most of the tourism now centers on beach activities like sunbathing, hiking, and sports.

Almost all hostels in Almuñécar are modern and part of large resorts. But there are Almuñécar hostels that also cater to inexpensive traveling and stays. Hostels in Almuñécar cater to everyone wishing to stay in this bustling seaside town.
