Andermatt, Switzerland, is located in Central Switerzland, in the canton of Uri. It is a mountain village and municipality with just over one thousand three hundred inhabitants. The official language is German.

The canton of Uri stretches from Lake Lucerne in the north to the famous St. Gotthard Pass in the south. Andermatt is situated in the Urseren Valley more than one thousand four hundred meters above sea level. Getting there is quite comfortable. The village is linked by three Alpine passes -- the Oberalp Pass to the east, the Furka Pass to the west, and the well-known St. Gotthard Pass to the south. In addition to that, it is connected to the national railway system.

Most tourists visit Andermatt due to the excellent opportunities for alpine sports. In winter, the diverse ski resorts of Skiarena Andermatt-Sedrun attract winter sport enthusiasts. In summer, the holiday region is great for hiking and biking. Due to its high elevation, the temperatures are comparatively low in summer as well. The average maximum temperatures in summer range from eleven to thirteen degrees Celsius. In winter, the daily mean temperatures only reach three to five degrees below zero. The climate is also quite wet. Visitors can expect around one hundred fifty days of rain per year.

There are various kinds of accommodations available in and around Andermatt. Tourists can chose from expensive top-class hotels, Andermatt, Switzerland hostels, holiday apartments, mountain huts, and camping sites. If you are more into a relaxing outdoor activity, you can try out the numerous winter hiking trails and enjoy the stunning panorama with an authentic landscape. In summer, it is an excellent holiday region for hiking, as well. The small glaciers, the very different mountain passes, and lakes with crystal-clear water are all great places to take a break from the hectic daily life.

If you want to get to know the local culture, check out Ursern Valley Museum. The museum tells the history and the culture of the valley, including the everyday domestic life in the late eighteenth century. Temporary exhibitions are available on the ground floor.
