Get to know Dominical (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Dominical.

Dominical is a beachside town in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. A former fishing village turned into a surfing oasis, this tourist attraction is easily accessible via the capital and international airport, whether you choose to take the winding inland route or the road along the coast.

Some locals bemoan the fact that their quaint coast-side village has welcomed many cars onto its unpaved streets as well as Gringo surfers onto its beautiful beach. Yet no matter how many expats have made themselves at home in this little town, the lack of franchises and chain restaurants has allowed the old fishing town feeling to linger until the present day.

Dominical safeguards not only its heritage, but also its wildlife. In the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, professionals and volunteers alike take on the task of nursing hurt and abused animals with the utmost love and care. Visitors can take a tour with a knowledgeable guide who will explain the condition and prognosis of the different animals. Although some of the animals make the sanctuary their permanent residence due to their chronic needs, others are nursed back to health during their temporary stays and then released back into their homes in nature. Aside from the exotic fauna, birds, monkeys, sloths, and porcupine, you can also enjoy a scrumptious meal in the midst of the park while taking in the spectacular view.

Another point of interest for anyone’s itinerary would be the Nauyaca Waterfalls. Visitors of any age or fitness level can partake in this splendid communion with nature since options include hiking, horseback riding, or taking a truck ride along the two and a half- mile (four-kilometer) trail to the refreshing waterfalls. Halfway along, you will come across an eatery where you can refuel with some cool drinks as well as snacks. Once you reach the falls, there are two levels. The upper falls are situated about 400 feet (120 meters) high and allow you to climb over rocks and capture the most beautiful pictures. The lower falls, about 260 feet (80 meters) in altitude, provide an opportunity for swimming and cliff jumping, not to mention the occasional view of gorgeous birds and nimble monkeys.

Once you have enjoyed a full day of adventures, you have several accommodations to choose from. Travelers on a budget will want to locate a Dominical hostel for an inexpensive overnight stay. There are only a few hostels in town, however, and they tend to earn low ratings from former guests. The lack of satisfaction tends to be due to bugs and mosquitoes, high noise levels, and very basic provisions. Yet, who needs more than a hostel bed for a few hours of sleep and a quick shower when the beach is calling early in the morning, with big waves inviting you to surf and soak up the sun in this tropical paradise?
