Get to know Kalgoorlie (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Kalgoorlie.

Kalgoorlie, also named Kalgoorlie-Boulder, is in Western Australia at the end of the Great Eastern Highway, about six hundred kilometres from Perth, so in the middle south of the state. It's the biggest city of the Goldfields-Esperance region, and the fifth-largest of Western Australia.

There are a few hostels in Kalgoorlie, around the Great Eastern Highway and Hannan Street. The gold rush in the end of the nineteenth century brought hundred of men after prospectors like Patrick (Paddy) Hannan discovered the first nuggets. Today, you can walk around the city and admire beautiful examples of gold rush architecture, such as the City Markets, the Government Buildings, and the Kalgoorlie Miner Building -- they might not be too far from your hostel. In fact, Hannan Street has changed very little since its early days of construction. At the end of this street, underneath an original poppet head, you can visit the Western Australian Museum Kalgoorlie-Boulder, explaining the history of mining.

At the southeast entrance of the city, a must do is the Super-Pit Lookout and the Golden Mile. You may need transportation or a bus from your Kalgoorlie hostel. The KCGM (Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines) Super-Pit is an open cut that can be seen from space, just over three kilometres long, just over one kilometre large, and five hundred metres deep. Trucks the size of houses move hundreds of tons of rocks all day long, every day. It is the largest gold mine of Australia. Check at the visitor center to know the blasting time of the day. Kalgoorlie also hosts two holes of the longest golf course in the world, the Nullarbor Links. It is very close to the Nullarbor Plain.

Most of the Kalgoorlie hostels are not too far from the city center, where you will find bars, restaurants, and shops, and the Goldfields Outback pubs are just a short drive from the city and the backpackers. The train station is three streets away from Hannan Street, where you'll find some backpackers.
