Get to know Exmouth (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Exmouth.

Exmouth is a small, quiet, and remote coastal town in the North of Western Australia, approximately halfway between the state capital, Perth, and the popular resort town, Broome. Exmouth is a great place to base yourself for snorkeling or diving trips, day hiking trips to the nearby national parks, and for trips to Ningaloo Reef. The beaches in Exmouth are white, sandy, clean, and quiet; it is not so rare to have a whole beach to yourself.

There are a few Exmouth hostels and budget hotels, which have dorm rooms available. There are also several camping grounds available -- if you're planning on camping, please make sure you only camp within the camping grounds, as it is illegal to camp within the national park area. Camping in restricted areas usually results in a pretty hefty fine.

Hostels in Exmouth are quite modern, with all the usual hostel facilities, such as Wi-Fi, communal areas, hot water showers, and book exchange. It can get extremely hot during the summer months (December to February). If you're traveling during these months, book a room with either fans and windows, or an air conditioner.

Depending on the season, hostels in Exmouth can be lively and filled with many other international travelers that want to get out and explore Australia's great outdoors. They can be great places to meet other like-minded people, and organise group trips to the nearby attractions. In the low season, however, Exmouth and its hostels tend to be very quiet and empty, though still maintaining a laid-back, relaxed vibe. It may be a little more difficult organising group excursions. The high season usually coincides with the whale shark season (March to July). Though quite expensive, there are many diving and snorkeling centers, which organise whale shark trips during this season. If planning on doing a whale shark trip, book in advance, as these trips are quite popular and get booked up early. Exmouth hostel staff can usually help arrange these types of trips.
