This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Red Cliffs.

Red Cliffs, Victoria, Australia, is a typical town in Victoria, in the southeast of Australia. It is close to the better-known town of Mildura, which is noteworthy for its grape production. The town has a population of roughly five thousand people and is situated on the fertile river plain of the Murray River, Australia's longest river.

The history of Red Cliffs dates back to the time after World War I. Soldiers returned from the war and they were offered land as well as tools to establish vineyards. Nowadays, wine making is the biggest industry in the area, which is dominated by local agriculture. The town's name derives from the seventy-metre-high cliffs, which have a distinctly red colour and are located east of the town. The area is particular interesting for nature- and wine-lovers.

The climate in northwest Victoria is semi-arid -- you get hot summers and comparatively cool winters. In summer, the average maximum temperatures are around thirty degrees Celsius. The winter offers daily maximum temperatures of sixteen degrees Celsius.

The offering of accommodation is limited. In town, you can find some Red Cliffs, Victoria, Australia hostels, which are suitable for backpackers. If you are not happy with a Red Cliffs, Victoria, Australia hostel, you can check out the bigger nearby town of Mildura. It is only thirteen kilometres away, and there you can find additional hotels, hostels, and holiday apartments.

If you look for some relaxation and outdoor activities, the Murray River is a perfect spot. By the river, you can have a picnic or you can go fishing, boating, and bushwalking. Red Cliffs Scenic Reserve is a must do. The reserve features the high red cliffs that give the town's name. Walkways, stairways, and information signs are suitable for tourists, who want to know more about the area and its history. History lovers should check out the local military museum, as well. Red Cliffs Military Museum was opened in the late twentieth century and puts on display a broad collection covering the Boer War to Vietnam. The large tractor “Big Lizzie” is displayed opposite the railway station. The remarkable vehicle was developed in the beginning of the twentieth century to work in the sandy soils of the region. It used to be the biggest tractor in Australia; its dimensions -- with a length of almost eleven metres and a height of almost six metres -- are truly impressive.
