Get to know Rockhampton (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Rockhampton.

Rockhampton is a small city on the Capricorn Coast -- Queensland -- in Australia. This is a nice city divided by the Fitzroy River. The busiest zone is just across the main bridge -- Fitzroy Bridge -– in the south part of the city. The surroundings have a lot to explore, so Rockhampton will be a good place to overnight.

The city is very small and you will not find it really lively, but it is worth a visit if you stop by. Nearby you will find the Tropic Marker that will let you know your position at 23o 26' 30'' S. If you go north, you will find the Dreamtime Cultural Centre with aboriginal guides that will let you find more about the aboriginal heritage in Queensland. Also in the north, you will find some caves under the limestone hills that you can explore on your own, with a guide or with the national park rangers. In the south, you will find the small towns of Yeppon and Emu Park -- the last one with a nice sandy beach and the first one facing the Keppel Islands and with good restaurants with fresh fish around every corner.

Rockhampton is easily reachable by the national coaches -- Greyhound and Premier -- and has a few local buses to the closest towns. It has also a train station and the airport is only four kilometers away.

There aren't many hostels in Rockhampton, but usually you won't see them fully booked. Rockhampton's hostels aren't that cheap compared to the rest of the Australian East Coast, but make sure you stay near the river for the best location.
