Ayr, Queensland, Australia, is a small town in northern Queensland, approximately ninety kilometres south of Townsville. It’s located in the heart of one of the state’s largest sugar-cane-growing areas, with other local produce including melons and mangoes.

Most backpackers stay in Ayr to replenish their travel funds by doing seasonal work on local farms and there are a couple of working hostels in Ayr, Queensland, Australia, that cater to their needs. Although those who are accustomed to flashy backpacker hostels may be disappointed, these hostels in Ayr, Queensland, Australia, offer simple, affordable, and friendly accommodation while you’re busy making money for your next adventure. When you’re not working, there are plenty of things to see and do around Ayr. Lynch’s Beach and Beachmount Beach are both situated within twenty kilometres of town, making them an ideal place to chill out when you have some free time. These lovely, relatively pristine beaches are great spots to see native wildlife such as wallabies, scrub turkeys, goannas, and turtles in their natural environment. However, if you’re in the area during the hot summer months, beware of the lethal box jellyfish that are prevalent in the area and stay out of the water. Another place that nature-lovers might enjoy visiting is Bowling Green Bay National Park, which is less than an hour’s drive from town and protects a range of unique landscapes and ecosystems. There are several walking trails so visitors can explore these.

Ayr is also an easy drive from Townsville, the largest city in northern Queensland, which boasts all the fun of city life, not to mention beautiful Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef, which lies just off its coast.

Whether you’re getting around by public transport or have your own car, Ayr is very easy to get to. If you’re driving it’s easy to find, as it’s situated just ninety kilometres south of Townsville on the Bruce Highway, the main route connecting Brisbane with northern Queensland. You can also get there by rail, with one service daily, and by bus, with regular services provided by Greyhound and Premier.
