Uden, Netherlands, is a small town in the east of the province Noord-Brabant. The famous Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan lived in Uden for a year in the early twentieth century and was inspired by the mills and landscape in Uden and its surrounding area. The mill that Mondriaan painted (known as “De Molen van Uden”) which is one of Mondriaan’s famous paintings, can still be visited today. The windmill is still active and from the small shop inside you can buy fresh flour to make your own bread or pancakes.

The mill that inspired Piet Mondriaan is not the only mill that can be visited in the region. The local Tourist Information Office has put together a route along a selection of mills that passes through several authentic villages. From a cultural perspective it is worth visiting Vluchtoord Uden, which was a refugee camp in during World War I. More than fifteen thousand refugees lived at this camp that consisted of wooden barracks, a schools, church, hospitals, and shops. In recent years, a memorial site was revealed that can be visited.
