Sacramento, the capital of California, is located in Northern California, northeast of San Francisco. Sacramento was an important trade point during the California gold rush, with stagecoaches, riverboats, and trains from the First Continental Railroad continuously arriving at the city. Today, there are many aspects of the city to enjoy, from its history, to its natural beauty, or its nightlife scene. Most things to do are centrally located around the Capitol building.

Sutter’s Fort is one of Sacramento’s first buildings, established in 1839 by the city’s founder, the Swiss pioneer Johann Sutter. Old Sacramento has many buildings from the mid-nineteenth century, history museums, and novelty shops. You can ride an early-twentieth-century train from the Sacramento Southern Railroad alongside the beautiful Sacramento River. Outdoors, check out the California Delta, American River Bicycle Trail, American River Parkway, Sacramento Zoo, and Old City Cemetery. For shopping, head to the Downtown Plaza.

There are several major nightclubs in Sacramento, with your choice of electronica, hip-hop, rock and pop, techno, or funk. Sacramento is also known for Dixieland Jazz, so you can expect to find a lot of jazz bars. Annual events include the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, Sacramento French Film Festival, Sacramento Japanese Film Festival, and the Sacramento Horror Film Festival.

You can find a Sacramento hostel near Old Sacramento and Capitol Park, which puts you within reach of most of Sacramento’s historical attractions and its nightlife scene. The Sacramento City Convention Center, Downtown Plaza, California State Indian Museum, Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento History Museum, Sutter’s Fort, and the Sacramento Southern Railroad are all within walking distance. The Sacramento Regional Transit system offers bus and rail services throughout the city. Hostels in Sacramento are priced similarly to other major cities in California. Sacramento can be reached by the I-5, by Greyhound, by Amtrak, or by plane at the Sacramento International Airport.
