Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Sarawak

Sarawak is a great destination for nature lovers. It is one of the few places in the world where you can see wild orangutans, but also a variety of other wildlife, virgin forests and caves.

Sarawak is Malaysia’s biggest state and is located on the island of Borneo. It shares the island with the other Malaysian state Sabah, the small sultanate Brunei and the Indonesian state Kalimantan.

Kuching is the capital city of Sarawak and this is where most travellers arrive if coming by plane. Many cheap flights to Kuching can be booked from cities in peninsular Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur, but there are also frequent flights from Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan in Sabah and a few international destinations. Kuching is known as the cat city and when you walk around the city it is hard to miss why Kuching is called the cat city. Cat-styled decorations can be found all over the city and there is even a cat museum and a cat cafe. Kuching is a pleasant city to spend some time with many shops and a lot of good street food and do some sightseeing before going into the jungle. Sarawak Laksa is a meal from the region and something one should definitely try before leaving the region. Many hostels offering a high quality for a low fare are available in Kuching.

Kuching is also a good departure point to visit the jungle for a few days, watch orangutans at the sanctuary in Semengoh or in the jungle, or just go for a day to the beach near Kuching. Visiting the jungle and getting to see theorang utans is a highlight of every trip to Sarawak. Your hostel can set you up with a nice multi-day tour to the jungle or transport to the jungle.

Miri is another popular city to stop by in Sarawak, but is mostly used as a stopover on the way to the highlands and the Gunung Mulu National Park. Sibu however, is a more pleasant city to spend some time. Visitors can spend time sunbathing on the beautiful white-sand beaches with clear water. Sibu is also the getaway to the Rejang River. The Rejang River is the longest river in Malaysia and here you can do river cruises and watch wildlife such as crocodiles, the proboscis monkey and many bird species.
