Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Saskatchewan

The vast and open land of Saskatchewan is beautiful to drive through in the middle of summer but tends to shut down in winter. There aren't hostels in every small town in Saskatchewan. You will find hostels in Regina. But there being more things to explore here. There are two main roads that lead into and out of Saskatchewan. The northern most highway takes you along to the town of Saskatoon, which is home to one of Canada's military bases. The southern most road goes through Regina and a couple of other interesting small towns with some grand history.

Regina is quite a cool town to hang about in and check things out for a day or two. There are a few different art galleries and museums to visit and some really pretty parks if you are there in the summer. It isn't recommended to come here to visit in winter as pretty much everything shuts down and the population go into hibernation for the winter.

About an hour drive west of Regina is the really cute town of Moose Jaw. It is worth getting here and spending some time if you can. The town has an entire network of underground tunnels that were used by the Chinese railway workers that were ostracized from society when the work on the railway lines ceased. Many of them lived and worked in these underground tunnels in Chinese laundry facilities out of sight of the townsfolk that despised them. These tunnels later became used by Al Capone to smuggle alcohol through during the prohibition. They run tours through the tunnels giving history on both of these different parts of Moose Jaw history and they are well worth doing. Also give some time to exploring the town as it has quite a good character to it.

Saskatoon is worth a day visit. The Boomtown museum is very popular as a activity to do here. They also have a zoo to visit but other than that, there isn't too much to do and there isn't at the time of writing a hostel in this location.

To get around Saskatchewan you have two options, you can drive a car, or you can take the Greyhound bus which runs services quite frequently to different towns along both of these major highways in Saskatchewan. The prices can be quite expensive so it pays to book well in advance and online bookings are usually cheaper than just rolling into the station and buying a ticket for the bus. It is a beautiful province. Take some time to enjoy rural Canada and some of the friendliest people in the country.
