Clean house, safe neighborhood, close to Coastal Trail!!! I came to Alaska in Early June 2011 as single female traveler for outdoor adventure, and to meet other travelers from across the planet. I read the great reviews for Anchorage Guest House in the guidebooks so I booked a bed in women's dorm room there and it was better than expected. Its a really nice house in upscale neighborhood a short walk from REI and cafes, and a 30 min walk to downtown on the Coastal Trail. The house has been remodeled and the sunroom, bedrooms, halls and kitchens are bright and shiny! The owner and manager were friendly and helpful, with local maps, telephone, inet, laundry and mountain bike rental available. The best part of the experience was meeting the international travelers that included mountain climbers, photographers, teachers, musicians, and tour guides -- excellent times and conversation at the big wooden dining table in the morning and evening. This place focuses on high quality service and a nice flow of interesting travelers each day, I highly recommend a few nights stay, esp if you are traveling solo or as a couple. — Veronica Allen, Boston, Mass, USA (2011-07-10) great place, very, very, friendly host! actually the hostel was full but they let me sleep in the entry hall. very, very clean place, nice services (i borrowed a bicycle and they wouldn't even charge me anything). very familiar and cozy place in a scenic, residential zone of Anchorage. Best hostel in Alaska. — Martin Plewnia, Berlin, Germany (2006-10-16) This was the weirdest place I've ever stayed. The owner advertises the place on his website as though it's a B&B and the price is consistent with a nice B&B (over $90 per night), so that's about what I was expecting. That's not what I got. First of all, the owner was the unfriendliest guy ever and (quite creepily) did not take his eyes off my girlfriend. The accommodations were like some college student's rental home and we were crashing in an absent roommate's bed. The bathroom was filthy! Sink cluttered with grooming products and dirt and the bathtub/shower hadn't been cleaned in a decade. The bedroom had a sign on the door asking that upon checking out we bring our bed linens to the laundry room (garage). The breakfast was fend for yourself and please do your own dishes, too, thank you very much. When I awoke the next morning at eight a.m., a reasonable time for a B&B breakfast, the owner was still asleep and the kitchen was a disaster! Open boxes of cereal and various loaves of stale bread were strewn about the counter. The gallons of milk in the fridge were expired! The sink was full of dirty dishes because the dishwasher was full of clean ones. I was not going to put them away for him. The drawers were full of dirty silverware. I managed to make coffee and go. I am planning to contact the Board of Health and the Better Business Bureau about this place. I did not pay that much money to stay in a filthy place and do this guy's dishes and sort his laundry. The owner sure has a sweet deal going, having people crash and do housework, and pay for it. Stay somewhere else! — Summer Traveler 2006 (2006-08-27) This is, by far, the best hostel I have ever stayed in. It is VERY clean and resembles a B & B rather than a hostel except for the dorm room. Andy was very helpful in suggesting things to do. I was there by myself and was not "weirded out" but appreciated the time he took to make suggestions or invite me along to the bar where he was playing at or out for dinner with everyone at the hostel (I was there in the off season so there were only about 4 of us there). Bring your walking shoes. I don't think it took me too long to get to town, just depends on how much you stop to look at. Many moose sightings on the coastal trail! Not recommended for single female travelers. — Annie (2005-04-14) Even if it is a longish hike downtown, at least it's a nice one along the sea shore. There are buses running, too; you can also rent bikes from Andy. I liked it there--very relaxed and quiet, very clean, very nice people, and the area is just so much prettier than most of the other hostels in anchorage. — Heike (2004-08-06) It's not 15 minutes to Anchorage center from the hostel, it's about a 60 minute hike.
