The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
Urban Centre City Hostel is a gloomy building with many rooms. Reception and other common areas are in a different building; both buildings have good Wi-Fi. Otherwise, the hostel doesn’t provide many amenities -- there are neither towels nor breakfast. However, it has good security and satisfactory service is given at the reception.
The Location
It's very close to the train station, Gare du Midi, where also the shuttle buses from Charleroi airport arrive. For public transport, the location is in fact very good, but a tad more difficult if you're arriving by car, as it can be rather difficult to park the car anywhere nearby. It is also close to the city center and its sights. Many good restaurants in a reasonable price class can be found nearby.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are adequate, though the atmosphere is quite gloomy. On the plus side, the dorm room has enough space. There are two big lockers under each bunk bed and the beds are comfortable enough. On the downside, the bunk beds do make noise. The rooms also are noisy, and you can hear music and talk from other rooms. Rooms do look clean, but dirt can be found behind beds. Also, the pillows are rather flat.
The en suite bathroom is good and the shower is great, with soap for the shower as well as sink. Though the bathroom could do with an extra curtain (in addition to the screen) to prevent the toilet area from getting wet, and some hooks on the door would also be an improvement.
Common Spaces
The hostel actually has no common areas at all in the building. Common areas are in the hostel next door, and this is where the reception is as well, which means you need to go outside for the common areas. The common area is a little lacking in atmosphere and gives the feeling of a cantina. There is a pool table as well as a internet corner with computer. The terrace with chairs will be enjoyable when weather permits. There is no kitchen for use -- there's only a water cooker and vending machines with snacks and soft drinks.
Summary
This is a good, comfortable hostel with a reasonable price tag for city standards. The location is also good for public transport and seeing the city’s sights. It's a shame that the common areas are in a different building and that overall it doesn’t have much ambiance.
