Maloka Hostel Reviews

Right in the middle of action in Medellín, Maloka Hostel is well situated for those who like to be close to the restaurants and nightlife. It is not a party hostel, but it is in an area that is full of places to party.

The Location

Maloka Hostel is in El Poblado neighborhood of Medellín, probably the hippest neighborhood of the hippest town in Colombia. It is full of great restaurants that serve international fare, and at night it comes awake with its countless bars. It can certainly feel like the Gringolandia, and in many ways it is. So if you want to experience a more authentic way of city life in the second-biggest city of Colombia, this is not the best area in which to be based. But it is a pleasant and safe area, full of hostels, and thus full of travelers.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The four-bed dorm in the Maloka Hostel is clean with very comfortable beds and quite a bit of space for four people. It doesn't have its own bathroom, but there are two in the corridor shared with other rooms.

Common Spaces

There is a kitchen and a terrace near the entrance and a bar that sells food and drinks. It is a pleasant place to hang out, if somewhat smallish for all the guests. It is also where the complimentary breakfast is served. Breakfast is pretty good, by the way. You can choose one of two menus, including the basics such as eggs and that or granola. And you get unlimited coffee to wake you up after a long night.

Summary

Maloka Hostel in the El Poblado neighborhood of Medellín is a pretty good bet in terms of comfort and convenience. You have all the comforts of a big metropolitan city just at your doorstep and relatively easy access to public transport to go to other parts of town that offer more authenticity. The sheer number of hostels, international restaurants, and bars in El Poblado means that you are in more of an international travelers' hangout than actually in a Colombian city. That is a negative for many, but it has also its advantages. All in all, El Poblado is an undeniably pleasant area in a very attractive "up-and-coming" city full of travelers and long-term foreign residents. And Maloka Hostel is a clean, comfortable, and modern hostel that offers you a stay well above average.
