Hostel Tadeo San Juan del Sur is a medium-sized hostel with a relaxed atmosphere and all essential travel amenities, including a hearty free breakfast. Additionally three friendly dogs hang out at reception.

The Location

The hostel is located one block south of downtown San Juan del Sur and one block from the beach. The neighbourhood is residential and very quiet. As this is a very small “town,” everything is within easy walking distance.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Both dorms and private rooms are on offer. The property has a bit of a sprawling quality with rooms and common areas located here and there. Dorms have sturdy wooden bunk beds and each bunk has two electrical sockets and a fan. There are no privacy curtains or small lights. The bottom bunk is slightly too low for sitting up. Sheets are clean and mattresses comfortable.

Although windows do have mosquito screens, these are not properly fitted and leave a one-centimetre gap for insects to flock in at night. There were not many mosquitoes but there are plenty of other annoying winged insects, and the resident gecko stood no change to eat them all.

Dorms are locked and there is always a staff member at the main hostel entrance. After 10 p.m. you have to ring a bell to be let in.

There are medium-sized lockers in the dorms (bring a padlock). The en suite bathroom has two showers and two toilets for a sixteen-bed dorm. The water is cold and the water pressure in the shower is very weak. There are hooks on the back of the shower door to put up your clothes. The dorm, the bathroom, and the rest of the property are all kept very clean.

Common Spaces

There are a couple of common areas around the property. Next to the reception is a kind of restaurant where free breakfast (egg, rice and beans, bread roll, banana, and pineapple) are served between 8 and 10 a.m. There are dining tables as well as rocking chairs, hammocks, and garden furniture in common areas throughout the place. Although there is a small pool, it was empty during our recent stay. There are some books lying around in the dorm, but no proper book exchange. The hostel has a social but quiet atmosphere and the Wi-Fi works well throughout the property.

Hostel Tadeo San Juan del Sur is a clean place to rest your weary head in a charming surf and beach town on Nicaragua's beautiful Pacific coast.
