Hostel The Hague - Den Haag is a small, fun hostel found right in the centre of The Hague, which is home to the Dutch parliament.
The Location
Hostel The Hague is located right by Grote Markt tram stop, which is a quick, two-stop trip from Den Haag Central Station (best used if you have a transport/OV chip card from The Netherlands) where a lot of the local trains as well as the long distance buses stop. It is also around a fifteen-minute walk, which is an option if you're traveling light. Trains also arrive at Den Haag HS Train Station, which is also a fifteen-minute walk away or a two- or three-stop tram trip, depending on if you change trams to get closer to the hostel. Most sights of The Hague are within a thirty-minute walk of the hostel and you can easily catch a tram to anywhere else like Scheneviningan Beach. There are many good restaurants, bars, and shops around the hostel, as it is located right in the city centre. A supermarket is also located right opposite the hostel, making self catering very easy.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has private rooms and dorms available. Dorm rooms are quite small with just four or six beds in each room. Dorms come with a locker for each bed (you need your own lock) as well as a sliding storage cage under the beds for bigger beds. Locker doors are not the most secure to shut though. Power points are not as convenient and everyone needs to charge their devices on one powerboard at the end of the room. The rooms seem to have air conditioning, but it only appears to work overnight, so rooms can get hot and stuffy during the day. One of the six-bed dorms is directly above the hostel bar, but the music is not loud enough to be a problem. Private rooms are only available in twin/double with a shared bathroom. Bathrooms are located in the hallway with two individual toilets and two showers per floor. With only a few small rooms per floor, there is never a wait.
Common Spaces
The main common area for the hostel is the de Gekkegeit pub downstairs, which also serves as the reception. On arrival you are offered a free arrival beer, which is a nice bonus. The bar serves a reasonable breakfast from 8 a.m. through midday, which includes a waffle with topping, hot drink, and fruit for small price. The bar also pretty much has nightly events, which includes a jazz night, which is really fun but has still a chill vibe. You also have a small kitchen for cooking basic meals but it only has seating for maybe six people. The kitchen could be a little cleaner though; during our stay it had very full garbage bins, which had obviously been missed in the daily cleaning. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the hostel as well as luggage storage in the bar. This hostel attracts a more relaxed but social crowd so it's a good place to meet like-minded travelers.
Summary
Hostel The Hague is a great option for anyone who wants a reasonably priced, small hostel right in the centre of the beautiful Den Hague that also doesn't have the dreaded triple-high bunks.
