Hostal Sonati is a small hostel in downtown León that also offers tours. The property could use a bit of an update but is well taken care of and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere and most importantly it's got a pool where you can cool off in the hot climate. There is also a friendly, rambunctious kitten roaming the place.
The Location
The hostel is located three blocks to the north of the cathedral in a residential area with small shops and restaurants. The neighbourhood is quiet and feels safe. All rooms face a courtyard and not the street and thus a good night's sleep is guaranteed.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are both private and dorm rooms available. The dorms have six or seven beds, with both singles and double bunk beds. The beds are metal and sturdy and there is plenty of room to sit up in the lower bunks. There are individual fans for most but not all beds and the dorms are spacious. Medium-sized lockers are inside the dorms (bring a padlock) and there are some electrical sockets around but no lights for each bed. The sheets are clean and the mattresses are comfortable. The en suite bathroom is old fashioned but clean, and there are towel racks for putting away one's clothes while showering. There is only cold water (which is a blessing in León's hot climate) and the water pressure is weak.
Dorms are not locked but there is always somebody at reception keeping an eye on the hostel entrance and overall it feels very safe. There are no mosquito screens on the windows and the dorms can get hot, but there are barely any mosquitoes around and the fans in the dorms help with the heat.
Common Spaces
The main common area is a large courtyard with the reception; a large book exchange (with plenty of English books and travel guides); a pool (which gets cleaned twice a week); a hammock; and various chairs, benches, and tables. Furthermore there is a large dining table and a well-stocked kitchen.
The place feels very social with friendly staff hanging around and overall a very good vibe. A small kitten roams the property and is always happy to have a good play fight. The common area only has a couple of electrical sockets. The Wi-Fi works well throughout.
