Hostel Rio Playa is right in the center of Playa del Carmen. It can be a bit hard to find; guests need to climb a steep stairway and then find the reception at the first floor on the left. The hostel is on three floors, with a swimming pool on the second and a bar as well.
The Location
The located is convenient to those traveling to Playa both by bus and collectivo. The ADO bus station is within a five-minute walk; it's the same for the collectivo stations for collectivos going to Tulum or Playa Del Carmen. The beach is also very near, less than three minutes, and nightlife happens all around that area (one of the main clubs is right beside the hostel). In addition, Hostel Rio Playa has a partnership with Hostel Che (a bigger and more party place), so guests from Hostel Rio Playa can enjoy their free welcome drink at Hostel Che.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms have bunk beds and are on average quite big, with around sixteen beds each. There are also some smaller rooms located on the third floor. The hostel is definitely old and it’s easily seen and smelled; we found many walls to have mold and the smell is not pleasant. Walls have also some holes, which are sometimes closed with tape, but many other times not, giving off the idea of old stuff that's dirty and uncomfortable. Some smaller rooms are accessible only through walking inside the bigger rooms, and it is therefore a bit annoying to have people waking through, in and out, the whole time. Beds don’t have their own plugs and lights, which is uncomfortable, as phones need to be charged further away from the bed. Bathrooms are also old and not very clean; some stuff is broken or not perfectly working. A good note is that showers work fairly well and hot water comes twenty-four/seven.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is free to use to guests and it is right next to the lobby and the first floor. Once again, it is not well cleaned and all equipments (pans, pots, forks, and knives) are very dirty and old. We found it unpleasant and not nice to cook and have a meal in the kitchen. The table is also always dirty, giving the feel that nobody really takes care of the hostel.
There is a small pool at the second floor with a bar. Unfortunately, not many events or happy hours are organized, so guests don’t really stick around the hostel. The vibe is then very quiet and it is hard to meet other fellow travelers. The staff doesn’t seem to try to interact with guests or anything similar. There is one club right next to the hostel, which plays loud music until the early hours of the morning, making it very hard to have a normal sleep.
Summary
All in all, this hostel is not well maintained and guests cannot expect anything nice, but it may be a good choice for partying.
