Hostel Condesa Chapultepec Reviews

Hostel Condesa Chapultepec displays a large amount of maps and signs that indicate they are a Hostelling International-registered hostel. HI's website indicates they don't have any hostels in Mexico and the nearest HI hostel is in Costa Rica. On their website they also say there is a free breakfast, and this was neither mentioned at check-in nor sighted.

The Location

La Condesa is a nice neighbourhood, especially for those who have seen the tourist hub of Centro and are looking for somewhere with a more authentic, day-to-day feel. Lots of bars and restaurants litter the area, all with a more natural vibe. Convenience stores are located at both ends of the block and a further ten minutes of walking takes you to a large supermarket that carries everything that you could conceivably required.
Bus transport is readily available, with a metro station fifteen minutes walk away and buses running on all the major streets.

The hostel itself is easy to find, well marked, and located on a busy street; however, the front desk is rarely manned so -- unless you can phone the operator or you're going to be arriving at the exact time you stated -- be prepared to send some time banging and buzzing. Luckily, there are plenty of bars and cafes in which to wait.

There is minimal parking, and it's all on the street.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two nine-person dorm rooms available, as well as a single private room. Rooms don't lock but there are lockers in room (bring your own lock) as well as two coat hooks behind the door and towel racks under the window. The dorm rooms are triple bunk beds; each bed comes with its own power point (which might work) and light. The dorm rooms are small and cramped, not in your average hostel way, but in your "how would you even fit nine standing humans in here, let along their luggage" kinda way.

The bathrooms -- wow (and not in a good way). There is a two-toilet, two-shower bathroom at one end of the hostel and a one-toilet, one-shower bathroom at the other. They're small. They're cramped. They're ridiculous. The single bathroom is underneath the stairs to the rooftop, and while standing in the shower you could reach up and grab someone's foot as they ascend the stairs. In the double bathroom, if you are over six foot, your knees will be touching the far wall as you sit on the toilet. The "double" shower is actually a standard-sized bathtub with an extra shower head installed and a divider placed in between -- tada, two showers with the added option of grabbing your neighbour's foot. There are soap dishes but no hooks and only one sink per bathroom. There is no space to change.

Common Spaces

Common spaces continue the theme but move from creepy to cozy. There is a sitting area with a single computer, lending library, and guidebooks. It is very small with a couple of crammed in couches and a TV for watching movies. There is a rooftop area, it is very pleasant, there are no tables or chairs but there is a hammock! However, the hammock tore on the second usage, so there is no longer a hammock.

There is a kitchen -- it has sinks, a small refrigerator, and stove. All the items required for cooking are present. Beside the kitchen there is an American-diner-style booth that seats four friends or four uncomfortable strangers.

This hostel contains no atmosphere; it is darkly lit most of the time and the stairs creak like crazy.

Summary

This hostel is a shame, it is located in a great neighbourhood, inside a beautiful, quaint old building and could potentially be something great. Instead, it is just bleh.
