Get to know Trier (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Trier.

Trier lies in the Rhineland-Palatinate state in the southwest Germany, near the border with Luxembourg; it's believed to be the oldest city in the country. The closest international airport is in Luxembourg, about fifty kilometres away, but the nearest in Germany is the Frankfurt Airport, which has a good train connection with Trier. Once you arrive in the city, look near the train station, if you want to stay in a Trier hostel, as most of the attractions are located within a short walking distance. However, if you're unable to get a place to sleep there, you can find some decent alternatives closer to the Moselle River.

Trier has a long history, which is still felt to this day. The most famous sights that you should definitely check out while you're there are a large Roman city gate The Porta Nigra, St. Peter's Cathedral, Roman Amphitheater, Imperial Baths, Hauptmarkt Square with St. Gangolf's Church, Electoral Palace, and the Basilica of Constantine, Rhineland Museum, Church of Our Lady, and the birth house of Karl Marx (which is now a museum). In case you are planning to use city buses a lot and visit some of the mentioned attractions, the city offers a special tourist card, which is sold at the information center and online.

Trier is certainly not unknown to travelers, but it is quite ofter overlooked, perhaps due to being relatively isolated from the main German cities; however, it is a wonderful place to visit with a lot to offer.
