Hostel Yaxha is a hostel with its own bar and restaurant. It is more of a stopping point for people to visit the impressive Mayan ruins of Tikal than a place to socialise. Once the large doors of the downstairs bar/reception/restaurant/common area are closed, you can enter by ringing a bell at a small blue door at the right of the street front.
The Location
The hostel is located on the island of Flores, one block away from Lake Petén Itzá. The neighbourhood is residential with some small shops around. Flores is a small island and you can walk around it in less than thirty minutes. The main mall can be found across the causeway in Santa Elena. The mall contains a large supermarket as well as a bank where you can buy tickets for Tikal. On foot the mall can be reached in twenty minutes. The neighbourhood is quiet and feels safe.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms come with or without air conditioning and en suite bathrooms. Dorms without air conditioning have some fans. In dorms with air conditioning, it is only turned on between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. The dorm rooms feature double or triple metal bunk beds. Each bed has a small light and an electrical outlet. The mattresses are a little bit on the hard side. Some of the en suite bathrooms have warm water, while others only have cold. The water pressure is good, but there is no place to put your clothes while showering.
Some dorms have lockers (bring a padlock) inside the rooms, while others have lockers located in the hallway. There is mosquito netting on all windows, keeping the dorms mostly mosquito free.
Common Spaces
There are plenty of common areas around this hostel. There is a common area on the ground floor in the restaurant/bar area. A further common room can be found on the first floor and another common/bar area on the second floor with a roof terrace. The Wi-Fi works best in the common areas, but can be touch and go in some of the rooms. The hostel has a subdued atmosphere and there is not much interaction between travelers. There is no kitchen available for use, but you can use a fridge in the bar to cool drinks and the hostel has an affordable menu of good food. Various tours and shuttles to other cities are offered at the reception, but it is advisable to shop around and compare prices.

• Hospedaje Yaxha is next to Pizzeria Picasso and across from hotel Villa del Lago. It's on the second floor of Cafe Yaxha.
• From the airport you can take a taxi to Flores which should not cost you more than 20 Q. From the bus station in Santa Elena you can take a tuctuc for Q 5 per person. If the bus drops you off in Flores, it's only a 2-min walk to Hospedaje Yaxha.
