Get to know Benicàssim (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Benicàssim.

Guess what? Benicàssim is also named and spelled Benicassim - It is the same destination. Goodbye confusion.

Benicàssim is a beach resort town in the province of Castellón, Spain. Its name comes from the Banu Qasim tribe of the Kutama Berbers who conquered the area during the eighth century.

The town is situated along Costa del Azahar and boasts almost four miles (six kilometers) of coast along its five beaches which are connected by a promenade, ideal for a relaxing beachside walk. Cyclists can enjoy riding along the Vía Verde, a path along the old railway route which ends in Oropesa right by the beach. Along the way are tunnels and the Torre de la Colomera, which you may be able to climb for some gorgeous views over the Mediterranean Sea.

Benicàssim attracts tourists not only due to its beaches but also because of its many festivals. It celebrates the Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, an annual music festival, as well as Rotator Sunsplash and MABE Benicàssim Art Show. There are also numerous religious festivities.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several talented architects designed 51 exquisite villas for wealthy families of the region. Today, visitors can travel along the Ruta de las Villas, or the Villa Route, in order to admire the architectural beauties. Of these properties, only Villa Elisa is publicly owned and at times open for viewing the interior.

If you prefer older architectural wonders, then visit Castillo de Montornés, a tenth century Arab fortress built atop ancient Roman ruins. It is located 1,640 feet (500 meters) high on the Desert de las Palmas mountain range, whose highest summit is Mount Bartolo.

Once you are ready to relax after a day of seeing the breathtaking sights of the town, you can look for a hostel along the beach, in particular Playa Els Terrers. Since there are not a lot of hostels available, the best option for budget-minded travelers is to stay in a vacation rental. Particularly if you are traveling in a group, renting a vacation apartment is the most budget-friendly choice. If split among three or more persons, this kind of vacation rental will cost less per guest than a hostel bed. Most of these rentals are situated along the coast and offer spectacular views as well as clean, fully furnished apartments.
