Get to know Isle of Harris (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Isle of Harris.

The Isle of Harris is located in the far northwest of Scotland and is the second-biggest island of the Outer Hebrides after its northern neighbour, the Isle of Lewis. As the Isle of Harris is in a rather isolated place, the best way to get here is to take the ferry from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Tarbet, or alternatively, to take the ferry from Ullapool on the mainland to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and use your own vehicle or the public transportation to get down to Harris.

As opposed to the flat Lewis, Harris is known for its beautiful mountain ridges and surprisingly turquoise waters, which, on a sunny day, look so incredibly inviting next to beautiful beaches so white and sandy that you will quickly feel like you're in the Bahamas -- of course, with the exception of the temperatures!

If you are more into visiting historic monuments, then Harris is not for you -- head right on to Lewis. However, if you are a keen nature enthusiast, you will have the most amazing time on this truly stunning island! With amazing hiking, a strikingly beautiful coastline, and the possibility to do a thousand boat trips around the island, you will never be left without an idea of what to do.

If you are longing for a really unique activity, why not visit the island of St. Kilda, one of the most remote points of the British Isles? A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this volcanic island boasts unique flora and fauna with the world's biggest colony of guillemots and fulmars, as well as Britain's biggest colony of puffins.

When on the Isle of Harris, you do not really have a wide choice of budget accommodation. Your options for a Isle of Harris, Scotland hostel will place you near the ferry harbour at Leverburgh, where you can spend the night in a typical island cabin for an affordable price.
