Get to know Gdynia (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Gdynia.

Gdynia is a port city in north Poland, on the south coast of Baltic Sea, with around quarter of a million residents. It is a part of the Pomeranian province and was first mentioned as a fishing village sometime around the thirteenth century, but it wasn't until after World War I that Gdynia gained more notice, as it became an important seaport for the Baltic Sea and the main harbour in Poland.

Today it is referred to as a Tricity with the nearby Gdansk and Sopot, and is known as one of the youngest and most modern cities in Poland. However, there are a few interesting historic buildings worth seeing, such as St. Michael the Archangel's Church in the neighbouring Oksywie. Quite popular among the tourists is an interesting place called Gdynia Aquarium -- a sea museum and also an aquarium, which is a part of National Marine Fisheries Research Institute, where you can admire the amazing underwater world. You can find there unique species from all over the world. Another interesting museum worth seeing is the Polish Naval Museum (Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej), which offers an outdoor and indoor exhibition of different weapons, planes, and helicopters. The Automotive Museum has a great collection of vintage cars and motorcycles.

If you want to know more about city itself, The Gdynia Museum is the right place to visit, because it offers an exhibition about the history of the city. But if you are looking to have some fun, you should visit Jump City Trampoline Park, which is one of the one of the biggest trampoline parks. Another fantastic way to spend the day is by visiting the magnificent Orlova Pier, which offers a beautiful view, lovely beach, and fine restaurants.

Visiting the city, which is particularly known for hosting Gdynia Film Festival every year and awards the Golden Lion, is a nice experience. There are good bus and trolley bus lines that will get you around the city quickly and a couple of solid and very reasonably priced hostels in Gdynia.
