"Best Hostel in NZ - We've stayed in Paul's place (Gazebo Backpackers) when it just opened. We enjoyed a really friendly area. Paul the manager is an amazing guy, when you first come in he usually makes you fresh ice-cream or cookies. His yard is full of fruits so if you get there the right time of the year you can eat those as well. "Easily one of the most charming backpackers in the country. Their site says "Be prepared to stay more than you planned" and that's absolutely correct. We came there for a night, spent the next one elsewhere and returned for nine consecutive nights. Be aware that if you're afraid of composting toilets this might not be the place for you. "Not suitable for private couples - We had booked for two nights in the private double room but were so disappointed we only stayed one. It was just a small room tacked on to the front of the house, only as wide as the bed with no furniture except for the bed and a single high shelf. Not even a mirror, and only one available power outlet. The room was not contained within the hostel but rather had a doorway directly adjacent to the front door which meant people were constantly walking past the doorway.
