Penang Ostellos![]() Malibu Cafe is another of those ever-popular backpacker cafes along Chulia Street with a few rooms upstairs. It's the usual basic arrangement, with simple but clean rooms with shared facilities.
The rooms are above the cafe and are of the usual budget standard. They are simple, unadorned but perfectly clean and acceptable for the very reasonable prices. It's a friendly, easy-going place which sees lots of comings and goings and the cafe in particular is a sociable place which is always full... ![]() Old Penang Guesthouse is a beautifully restored pre-war building in the historic city of Penang, Malaysia and still retains much of its old world charm. It is believed to have been constructed more than 100 years ago. It is especially important as an example of a very early shop house prototype. From the original mosaic-tiled flooring, intricate artwork, inner courtyard and to wooden shuttered windows, every aspect echoes the history of the region, and offers a beguiling journey through this... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "The Wan Hai Hotel is one of these old ancient Chinese homes that breathes history and atmosphere in every creak of its wooden stairs and floors. There are carved shutters on the windows and the dorm faces the street with windows all along one wall which make it bright and cheery and a great place to watch thunderstorms in the monsoon period. There were a few while I was here and I was a bit worried about leaks in the ancient wood but the old house is water tight! The only disappointing thing...![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "This budget hotel has just one dorm room at present and seems to attract travelling locals as well – not always a good sign but they are renovating a bit and desperate for custom at the moment so it could change later.
There are three bunk beds on the first floor overlooking the access lane leading to the hotel. It's a good location right on the main road (Lorong Chulia) leading through Chinatown and the traveller's hang out point but about 50m down a side road for peace and quiet....
