Get to know Bamberg (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Bamberg.

Bamberg -- a well-deserved UNESCO World Heritage Site -- charms all of its visitors, young or old. It is a precious little town with an absolutely stunning old city, full of sights of all kinds, and surrounded by pristine landscape. No matter what you look at in Bamberg, it will please the eye -- you'll see the loveliest of architecture, parks, and gardens or the river running through. There are more than two thousand four hundred original old buildings, many of them wood-frame houses that have not taken a scratch during the war, which provides for an almost uniquely preserved ensemble.

Apart from this it is the beer that makes Bamberg famous! For over a thousand years, beer has been an integral part of the town's culture and there still are a whopping nine breweries in town offering more than fifty different kinds of beer. These are usually served up in beer gardens, old pubs, and beer cellars with a to-die-for atmosphere. The town, though ages old, is very popular with young people who come to study at the local university. Thus there is quite a nice little bar scene going on as well as cultural events you would expect from a student town.

Despite its size, Bamberg has managed to keep alive both its private- and government-run hostels. Let's hope it is going to stay this way, as a government-run hostel may put you out of central Bamberg, a little out of town. Private Bamberg hostels tend to be conveniently located in the city center, usually even in one of the marvelous old houses. This means though that you generally have to put up with limited space, as houses are designed like that and also really expensive. In return you do get a homey atmosphere and sometimes even views over the city.

Getting to hostels in Bamberg is really easy if you choose a central one as the train station is conveniently located in the centre of town. Due to its small size, Bamberg can be navigated on foot but there are also buses for those who find that convenient.
