Get to know Augsburg (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Augsburg.

Augsburg is the third-oldest city in Germany, the third-largest of the state of Bavaria, and the only German city with its own legal holiday, the Augsburger Hohes Friedenfest, celebrated in August every year.

With about one hundred and forty-five square kilometers and fewer than three hundred thousand residents, Augsburg is not exactly among the biggest cities in the country. Regardless of that, it offers a solid public transport network (consisting of buses and trams), one or two good Augsburg hostel options, and a couple of interesting things to see while you are there.

Besides the expected attractions like the city hall built in early seventeenth century and zoological and botanical gardens, the town of Augsburg also offers a couple of remarkable historical sights. Particularly well known is Fuggerei, the oldest social settlement in the world. This town within a town, named after its founder, is located just a short walk from the city centre and can be visited for a price of few euros. Other significant historical sites include a bell tower Perlachturm from the tenth century, Augsburg Cathedral, St. Anne's Church, Church of St. Ulrich and St. Afra, and a baroque palace Schaezlerpalais.

If you would like to visit some more modern attractions, there are a few nice options too. A lovely place for children is a marionette theater Augsburger Puppenkiste, located in the historic center of Augsburg. The city is also a home to the first artificial whitewater course of its kind, Augsburg Eiskanal, that was built for the Summer Olympics in the seventies. The Twentieth Olympic Games were also the reason for building a symbol of modern Augsburg, Dorint Hotel Tower, a Marina City look-alike, which is in fact the highest building in the area.

And just in case you get bored, the cities of Munich and Ulm are located only about an hour away and can be easily reached by train.
