Aalen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is a large town located in the east of the southern German state of Baden-Würrtemberg. The early history of Aalen is closely connected the Roman Empire; it used to be the largest Roman cavalry fort north of the Alps. Therefore, the town has the largest museum in the south of Germany on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Although Aalen is not as well known as bigger cities such as Stuttgart or Ulm in the area, it has many different points of interests to offer for travelers who are interested in architecture, culture, and history. A picturesque town centre; the castle Fachsenfeld; several other museums such as the primeval world museum; and the ore mine “Tiefer Stollen,” which is open for visitors are only some of the sights that can be visited in and around Aalen.

Currently the options for hostels in Aalen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, are limited. Even if Aalen is not the busiest place, keep in mind that especially during the summer period, your Aalen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany hostel can be booked out if larger travel groups such as school classes arrive. So try to book ahead if you have precise travel plans. Alternatively, check out the nearby towns Heidenheim, Dinkelsbühl, or Nördlingen where you can find another hostel with a good quality for a reasonable price.

If you plan to go out at night, there are numerous premises to check out. Most popular bars and restaurants are located in the historic centre. Since the centre is comparatively small, you can easily walk around at night and hop from bar to bar. Some bars and nightclubs are not directly in the Old Town, but are nearby and easy to reach. Aalen has a small university by the name of “Hochschule Aalen,” with more than five thousand students. The young students also have a positive effect on the nightlife in town.

If you are into culture, Aalen offers the smallest civic theatre in Germany, a picturesque Old Town with numerous sights and several museums. The most important museum is about the Limes, the historic borderline of the Roman Empire. The museum provides information on the Limes, the fort, the Roman troops, and cultural articles found in the excavations of a former village nearby. The archaeological park right next to the museum shows the visitors the remains of the walls and the left-side gate of the previously very important fort. Additional reconstructions of the barracks and the Roman statues give a very real impression of the life back then. Do not forget that Aalen is near the famous Romantic Road, which passes by in Nördlingen, which is located only thirty-five kilometers away from Aalen. Renting a car is the best option to see Nördlingen and more of the Romantic Road.
