Get to know Heilbronn (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Heilbronn.

Heilbronn, nicknamed the Käthchenstadt after the famous play Katie of Heilbronn, lies in the third-largest German state, Baden-Württemberg, about fifty kilometres north of Stuttgart. It is divided into nine districts, which are connected by solid bus and tram lines, and is a home to about one hundred and twenty thousand residents. As the city is situated on the banks of the Neckar River, it has a long history of settlements. It played a particularly important role in the Middle Ages and through the industrial revolution, but the majority of the city was unfortunately later destroyed during World War II.

Many signs of its rich history can still be seen, however, although Heilbronn is nowadays more famous for its wine industry. There are plenty of opportunities to try some of the local wines, from the Wine Villa to numerous different festivals throughout the year.

As far as the historic sights around the city go, you should definitely visit the market square (Marktplatz) with its city hall and astronomical clock from the late sixteenth century. Other interesting places worth seeing include the Gothic stone building Kathy's House, St. Kilian's Church, Götz Tower, Bulwark Tower, Trappensee Castle, and Kirchhausen Moated Castle, just to name a few.

Even though Heilbronn is a nice city to visit, it doesn't often make the wishlists of international travelers, so that explains why the Heilbronn hostel selection is very slim. Dorms are not among the cheapest and you will probably have to take a bus to get to them, but it is better than nothing.
