This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Tønder.

Tonder is a small town, with just over 7000 people, located in the southern part of Denmark. It is named after the municipality of which it is the capital. Hostels in Tonder are located all over the town, including the center of the city. Simple, clean rooms are available. WiFi available in most hostels. You can order meals at your hostel for a taste of a proper Danish breakfast.

While in Tonder, remember to visit the River Vida, once the primary trade route running through the town. In the 17th century, the river became too shallow for ships to pass through, rendering sea trade useless. You can find the river running through the Old Town. The banks are dotted with old, somewhat rural buildings, as well s nature reserves in the river itself.

The old buildings in town, like the Klostercafe, are the remnants of merchants’ homes from the town’s past. Many of them still stand today, dating all the way back to the 16th century. Many of these are located by the river, including one old storage facility from 1598. This area is a pedestrian zone, an effort to preserve the old buildings in the face of pollution.

While in Tonder, visit the market square, one of the more unique parts of town. It is not a real square, but there is much to see and do here. The Klostercafe is nearby, along with the Kristkirkken (an old church), and the tourist center. There is also a statue called the Kagmanden here, built in the 1600s to bring order to the local townsfolk.

Last, but not least, is the Kristkirkken, or the Christchurch. It is not the first church to have been built in that spot, as wooden buildings were in place from the early 1100s. The church you see today was built in the 16th century, with pictures and architecture inside from the 17th century also.
