It has an institutional feel which is not surprising considering the building used to be a nunnery. Rooms and bathrooms are clean and the kitchen is decent. However, the common area appears to be a congregating place for the local homeless -- and so, doesn't have a travelers feel. It is not a comfortable place to hang out. Strathcona is great for a walk and a... GO Backpackers Hostel  "Friendly and Accommodating - Go Backpackers hostel in Edmonton really impressed me. The staff work hard to make the guests feel comfortable. Twenty-four/seven service at the front counter makes it a treat if you need info. They are knowledgeable and dependable. The rooms were clean. The location is perfectly close to transportation to get around to most of the city, and it's near the river valley where you can walk/ride on excellent trails. They have a huge river valley for running, biking, blading etc. It's better to come in the summer when there are loads of festivels and concerts. It's a sports city. They love their hockey (Oilers), their football (Eskimos), and lots of other sports. So if you want to see great sports, Edmonton has it. If you want to do shopping, Edmonton has the biggest shopping mall in the world, West Edmonton Mall. There's quiet a bit to do, but the city is at it's best in the summer.
