Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Bavaria

The state of Bavaria is situated in southern Germany at the foot of the Alps. It is the largest federal state in Germany. The countryside is made up of small towns, beaches, forests, snow-capped mountains, vineyards, and medieval castles and churches.

The state boasts 1200 museums and over 100,000 monuments. With over 350 spa resorts, Bavaria has been called the birthplace of naturopathic treatments for well-being. People come from all over the world to see or take part in the Landshut Wedding Pageant, which is a historical reenactment of the wedding between George of Bavaria and Hedwig Jagiellon. The pageant involves the efforts of over 2000 people to bring it to life. The highly-regarded Oberammergau Passion Play is also very popular. Tickets are often purchased years in advance.

Munich is the capital. It is the largest city in the country, and there is no shortage of museums to visit there. Budget travelers take note: the city has a policy that on Sundays visitors can purchase a “one euro” pass and visit 12 museums. Those under 18 are free.

No visit to Munich would be complete without a stop at the Hofbrauhaus. The beer hall is legendary with its painted ceilings and oompah bands. The city park Englischer Garden is bigger than Central Park in NYC. At the same time, there is plenty of shopping in the city along with many places to eat and stay the night. You can tour the BMW factory or surf on the Eisbach River. Other places to see include the Asamkirche Church, the 2 public squares, the Bayern Stadium, the Olympia Park and the Olympic Stadium, Munich’s art quarter, the State Collection of Antiques, and the Wittelsbach Residence.

Three routes cross the country and are tourist favorites. The scenic east to west scenic Castle Route runs from Mannheim clear to Prague and features 70 castles along the way. The 2nd route is The Romantic Route which began as an idea from travel agents in the 1950’s who wanted to bring tourists to the region. It runs for approximately 220 miles between Wurzburg and Fussen. This route features castles and beautiful small villages. There are plenty of hotels and hostels along the way for weary travelers. The third route is the German Alpine Rd. This is the oldest route in Germany and is known for its Alpine peaks, 20 lakes, world famous attractions, beer gardens and 60 spas that are situated along the roadway.

Accommodations in Bavaria range from luxury spa resorts to camping sites. In between are the hotels, B&B’s, guesthouses, and rooms on river boats. Hostels are generally clean and well-kept.
