Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Lorraine

Lorraine is one of the oldest historical regions in northeast France. It borders Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg. Lorraine was not always part of France. When Charlemagne divided his Carolingian empire in the 5th century, Lorraine was among the central region alongside Holland, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg. It was given to his grandson, Lothair, which is where the name Lorraine comes from. This region is on the border with Germanic countries and as a result has a more German feel to it than some of the other French regions.

Some of the largest towns in the region are Metz and Nancy, both of which are capitals of industry. Metz was also one of the largest cities in the Carolingian Empire and was a German seat of the Holy Roman Empire until 1648. Metz is three hours by car from Paris; if you take the TGV (high speed train) it will take around four hours. Trains leave from Paris’s Gare d’Est. It also possible to get to Metz from Luxembourg City or Strasbourg, both across the border, by plane from Paris. You will need to then take a train back into France. Hiring a car isn’t necessary, as the regional rail network in France is pretty good.

Hostel accommodation in the Lorraine region can be found mostly in the two main cities: Metz and Nancy. Hostels in France are similar to hostels you may be familiar with from travelling; in this region they are often found in historic buildings so while they’ll be spacious and well-equipped, they may be cold in the winter! Your hostel staff can help you arrange tours of the historic sites in each town.

There are two very distinct sides to this province. It lies in the industrial belt of northern Europe - the coal, steel, and iron belt - but today is more known for auto factories like Mercedes Benz and information technology. The Moselle region, where Metz is, retains its strong German/Carolingian character. You shouldn’t miss Saint Etienne cathedral, with its large stained glass window, or the Basilica of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains, which is the oldest church in France. A mere hour away is the more modern city of Nancy. It was settled in the Middle Ages but really developed under Polish king Stanislas in the 18th century. The city square there still bears his name and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other notable sites in Lorraine include the largest American cemetery from the First World War and the war memorial at Verdun.
