Village Inn Hostel

Not there Yet
After the great reviews of a few Hostels websites, I was looking forward to a fun little Hostel in the East Village. Although it is clean (whether it remains so is yet to be seen, as when I checked out, they told me to leave the sheets on the bed) the place is quieter than a cemetery. I walked through the entire place and although there were people around, not one person was talking. The common room is a small, stark, white room set up with three large, plastic, white tables -- not the most inviting. A large TV is in there, but there is no real place to sit and watch it. As far as I could see there was no internet available -- wireless or other. The Hostel is completely unsigned -- to the point that a box of menus for a restaurant in the area is stuck to the door, along with other pieces of paper in no way related to the hostel. It's really confusing if you are unfamiliar with the area. The customer service was only ok. I had to leave early in the morning and when I asked if I could call a cab, I was told to just go out into the street and walk down to the corner (it was still dark and I was traveling alone). The beds are relatively comfortable, but squeak more than any I've come across. It literally squeaks loudly when you breathe. This could be a good hostel if the atmosphere and signage are taken care of. If you are just staying a night, or don't have interest in spending any time at the hostel other than to sleep or meeting your fellow travelers, then it's a fine place.
