For those seeking a "botel" by the river, the Vita Nova is worth the money. If you're looking for a very cheap, no frills single room, which is rare in Amsterdam, Vita Nova is most possibly the cheapest you can find.
The Location
This hostel is conveniently tucked near Amsterdam Centraal Station, which is the main transportation hub in Amsterdam. It is only about seven minutes' walk. When you reach Oosterdok, Vita Nova can be easily found with its prominent label. Moreover, you can reach all major sights like Damrak and the Red Light District in a short walk. Convenience stores, restaurants, bars and cafes, and museums are also a stone's throw away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are very basic and extremely small, to the point of being claustrophobic. It is not recommended for taller guests because the beds are short. The rooms are only suitable for those looking for an overnight sleep and not seeking to linger in their rooms for long. Those seeking a peaceful night's sleep should look elsewhere as the walls are not well insulated from sounds. You can listen to footsteps, voices from the restaurant, and even noises from those doing their business in the toilet next door (if your room happens to be next to a toilet).
Common Spaces
Guests can chill out at the restaurant and the upper balcony, where they can sit and enjoy splendid views of the river and other sights across the bank. They can also watch programs on television and smoke only in the restaurant. Unfortunately, there is no internet access.
Breakfast
Food servings are generous and it's a major plus for the price you pay. You can eat to your fill with the huge servings of ham, cheese, toast, jam, peanut butter, coffee, and cereals.
Summary
Overall, this is not a party place as there are not really fun programs being carried out onboard. Those looking for more fun should look elsewhere. For those looking for a simple budget lodging with privacy and a warm service, Vita Nova should be pleasant enough.
