Jaeger's Hostel in Munich has a rustic feel when you walk in the door. The floor and furniture are dark wood color with nice, wide sofa seats and an internet café lining the far wall.
The included breakfast is a simple toast with jam and butter, tea, or coffee -- enough of a tuck to get you to a café for a real breakfast. This involves walking around the corner since the location of the hostel is about five minutes across the street from Hautbanhoff (Central) Station and easy to find as long as you exit the correct side of the station. Jaeger's also provides a coupon for one free drink at their adjacent bar, which has nice, big tables and a TV on the far wall.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Strangely, Jaeger's requests that you return the key to the front desk each time you leave the building so "no one gets locked out." Not only is this hostel the single one that we find to still use actual keys instead of card keys and an electronic system, there is only one key for the entire room! The key situation ended up being most unfortunate because one person in the four-person room was not back by the time we were ready to sleep. This means that we had to leave the door unlocked for him since we were in the room and the dead bolt can only be turned with the single key available. Not only are the other room occupants strangers, we had to sleep with the door unlocked! Despite the area being quite safe, this seems to be unnecessary. The receptionist says management is working on getting a card key system, but who knows how long or when that will be implemented!
An amenity of convenience is the elevator, which helps immensely if traveling with a roller or hand-carried luggage. The bathrooms are separate from the shower stalls and are clean with nice hot water free of charge. On our floor, the facilities are in the hallway, but other travelers have the bath facilities in the middle of their room! There are tall skinny lockers for each bed, which works if your luggage is skinny enough to fit. The large windows in the room are lovely during the day, but bring an eye shade if you need darkness to sleep. The curtains are so thin that the street lights shine right into the room.
Common Spaces
The entire first floor, from the reception to the bar, is quite conducive to meeting other travelers, mostly young adults. We find the environment very comfortable and not too smoky at all.
Summary
While Jaeger's was a great place for one one night, the key situation and the thin curtains were enough to make me find somewhere else to stay. The same street is lined with other hostels, and if travel takes us to wonderful Munich again, we will be choosing an alternative location.
