Mates Place provides a fun social atmosphere for an economic price. If you want a small room with only a couple people or a dorm room for up to ten, this is the place for you. While the hostel has definitely been used, it is still relatively clean and has information and advice for your travels around Sydney.
The Location
The hostel is located less than one hundred meters from the Kings Cross train station and is within walking distance to the opera house, botanic gardens, city center, and harbors. Outside of the hostel are bars, restraints, internet cafes, and tour and travel companies. Two supermarkets are located nearby for the chefs who wish to cook it up at night or for the non-chef who wants a frozen dinner.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are spacious and have comfortable beds with air conditioning. Inside the rooms are lockers big enough to stash all your belongings and refrigerators with freezers for your personal goods. There are showers in most rooms and or directly across from the bed rooms. The showers are hot and have soap dishes but not too many hooks to hang your towels. The showers and rooms are cleaned and vacuumed every couple days. Sheets, pillows, towels, and blankets are provided upon check-in.
Common Spaces
There are common spaces on each floor containing a couple chairs and tables. There is also a large TV room that has cable and carries most sporting events. The kitchen is large enough and has granite countertops, a large stove, oven, microwave, and plenty of cookware. There is also a free section where the hostel provides coffee, sugar, salt, cooking spray. Outside of the TV room is another common area where people coalesce before heading out to the bars. This area also includes fast internet and if you have Wi-Fi you can get it anywhere in the place. If you want to light up, go outside because its not allowed inside the hostel, but drinking definitely is.
Highlights
One of the differences from other hostels is that Mates Place provides everyone free booze. There are nightly pub crawls that keep the party mellow at the hostel but exciting on the town. Pub crawls often include a free drink at every place you stop, so move quickly -- although at some places you will have an hour to indulge yourself in as much free drink as possible. Also there is the occasional night where the hostel cooks for you, and provides food for the masses.
