Globetrotters is a conveniently located hostel north of the Liffey River. The hostel shares its building with The Townhouse Hotel. The convenient location is ideal for beginning your sightseeing in Dublin. The hostel is mainly run by older staff more suited to the hotel.
The Location
The hostel is located in a safe area, a few blocks from O'Connell Street, a major shopping street, and the Spire. The hostel is easy to find using the directions on the hostel website, with a clear sign outside. There is an Aircoach stop nearby for easy transportation to/from the airport, as well as a LUAS tram stop (Abbey St.). Connolly Station, for many trains to points outside of Dublin, is only a ten-minute walk away. Temple Bar, Dublin's famous area for nightlife, is at most a twenty-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are quite crowded with limited space. Six-, eight-, and twelve-bed single gender dorms are available, as well as private rooms in the Townhouse. The bunks are relatively comfortable, but the upper bunk does not leave much room, so watch your head! A reading light is provided for each bed, but the room lacks sufficient electrical outlets and lockers. The lights also automatically turn off around 11 p.m. and turn on around 8 a.m.
The en-suite bathrooms get quite busy in the morning, especially in the larger dorms, so be ready to wait. The washrooms (which include the shower) are relatively clean, but lack counter space. The showers do not provide a place to put your soap and shampoo, although there is a dispenser provided. Showers can take a few minutes to warm up but are otherwise fine. There is adequate space in the washroom to change.
Common Spaces
The hostel features a nice common room with a chess board, LCD TV, and a games table. There is also an adjacent area near the reception with seating. There are two computers that provide free internet service. The common areas are nice for being able to meet people, but the hostel does attract a bit of an older crowd and is not a party hostel. Complimentary luggage storage is available until around 8 p.m.
The best part of this hostel is the amazing Irish breakfast provided each morning. It is served in the hotel restaurant, and includes baked beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, cereals, coffee/tea, fruit, juices, and more!
Summary
The hostel overall is good. The rooms are unimpressive and need to be updated, but the common areas are well-kept. The hostel is a bit far from nightlife but is convenient for sightseeing. The breakfast is one of the best you'll ever get in a hostel, and makes staying here worthwhile.
