MIJE Hostel - Fourcy

I stayed here in the 1970.s. We slept sixteen in a room. We all shared one toilet. You kept your money and passport in your sock while you slept. Breakfast, served in the courtyard, was a stale roll and a bowl of coffee to dunk it in. When we didn't make it back for curfew we roamed the streets and slept under Pont Neuf with a load of other vagabonds. We were in the center of one of the most beautiful cities in the world and we met people from all over the world who had stories to tell and a drink to share. Nowadays I am a successful person who stays at the Marriott or the Hilton. I would trade all of their comforts for another night at 6 Rue de Fourcy. This was not a honeymoon hotel or a place to take the wife and kids. This place was (and possibly still is) an adventure and a chance to meet other adventurous travelers. I have a hundred stories to tell about Fourcy. Nowadays it's a story if I get a chocolate on my pillow. Forget the reviews and the people who need extra pillows and free shampoo. Go there and place your hands on those big doors that were there before the French Revolution and count yourself lucky that you got there before the place becomes another cog in the wheels of consumerism.

I have very high standards and this hostel met them all. I stayed here for four nights in December 2006 -- over the Christmas holidays. It is a clean, safe, quiet hostel in an incredible location -- five minutes to Notre Dame and the Crypts and the Deportee Memorial, in the heart of the Marais, around the corner from the Shoah Memorial, easy access to the metro, down the street from a great little market with an orange-squeezing machine so for just 2 euros you can round out your hostel breakfast of baguette, croissant, coffee, and hot chocolate. I can't recommend it highly enough.

So, on our last night in Paris, we booked this hostel. We entered the room and everything was fine. My girlfriend and I booked a room on the second floor and the view was great, but alas, not all is roses at this place. When you book this place be sure that you know what you're getting. Apparently, a single room is one person although in your reservation the form says "person(s)." I thought that meant a small bed and an addtional charge (in this case the membership) for each additional person. We walked in later that night (i'd say about 11) and I showed the guard my key and he waved me in. About twenty minutes later we get a knock on the door saying that the room was for one person even though the sign at the desk does not explicitly say ONE person. According to the guard, our options were as follows -- leave, have one of us stay in a dorm room, or have him call the police and have them resolve the issue! I wish I was joking. We argued for twenty minutes (he rudely stating that having us in a single room was illegal and we demanding to speak to management [no one was apparently available]) and finally he let us stay in our room as originally paid for. Simply amazing! So, if you do would like to try out this place, word of advice beware.

We stayed for six nights last February, and it was an excellent choice. The location is unbeatable, the place is well kept, everything's clean (including the non-enclosed W.C., which was my main concern before getting there). The historic building is a nice touch of atmosphere. Even the breakfast was nice for its standard. The stuff was friendly, though I did try my broken French with them, so I don't know what happens in English-only communucation. Trying to think of drawbacks -- the hostel is a bit group-oriented, so there are no public area to speak of (well, I guess in warmer seasons the courtyard is handy) -- it's not a place to hang out and meet people. There were school groups staying there at the time, and that amounted to the expected level of noise, but we did sleep well in nights. The lockout and curfew hours might bother some. You will have to do some stair climbing with your suitcase. But the bottom line is that if you come to see Paris and you're looking for a nice, safe, central place, I certainly recommend MIJE Fourcy.

What more can I say? What more can any traveller to Paris want? The few days spent at Le Fourcy will stay long in my memory.

This was my first hostel stay ever and it was abolutely excellent. I was searching for a quiet hostel that was located in the middle of town and I found it with Hotel Fourcy. Fourcy is a part of the MIJE organization that also includes Foucannier and one other hostel in Paris. They keep the residences absolutely immaculately clean and comfortable. The buildings are gorgeous and have that awesome quaint Parisian feel, within walking distance to a lot of convenient locations (close to metro stops, train station Gare de Lyon, the river, and Notre Dame). My only recommendation -- expect an awkward pillow. They are round and tucked into the sheets. You can fix this by using your own clothes or towel to plump it up, however. Also I would recommend, for any traveler, earplugs -- not because this hostel is loud, but in case you're rooming with a snorer! Also, there were no lockers to keep your belongings in, so you have to pack up your bag everyday and leave it downstairs by the front desk in a room that is secured by video camera. Enjoy your stay -- I know I did.

As a baby boomer hostel user, I found this was fantastic. We stayed in a 3-bed attic loft. The four flights of stairs were more than compensated by the views across the Parisian rooftops. I felt like I was in the movie Moulin Rouge! The restaurant in the crypt, the courtyards, the help at the reception and the location within easy walking distance to cafes, supermarket, the Seine, Notre Dame and the Louvre make this an excellent place to stay. I am already planning my next trip.

I visited here with a school group of 20 boys some years ago and the location can't be beaten. It would be great to come back and stay, but because they discriminate on age I cannot.

The hostel was nice, and the rooms were clean and everything. And surprisingly I met a few people hanging out in the courtyard. The only downside to this hostel is their lack of friendliness and organization. I called to confirm my reservation as requested, and yet when I got there they somehow had lost it and I was only able to stay here for one of the four nights. Not cool at all. Plus the receptionist was very rude and unfriendly, and seemed annoyed when asked simple questions about the area. If you can deal with that it's an alright place to stay.

This is a 17th century building refurbished as a hostel and hotel. It has stone walls and a large courtyard in the center. Same ownership as Fauconnier and Maubuisson.

I stayed at this hostel for 2 nights in July. It has a very good location, kind staff, and clean rooms. What else would you like?!

This place was so convenient to the Metro line that takes you to all the major sights. Plus the neighborhood was great, and a lot of museums and Notre Dame were within easy walking distance. The only downside was that it was filled with American school groups, which could be noisy at night and early in the morning. But there are showers in every room, sometimes toilets, and sometimes even two showers. The rooms were very clean, and the staff was very friendly. And they offer you dinner as well as breakfast.

Great location, very safe. Very clean, friendly staff for the most part. Nice courtyard to sit and talk and meet people. There are showers in the rooms, but shared toilets. I spent two weeks there while looking for an apartment and still miss being there now, 6 months later!! The only problem I had was the 1 am curfew which doesn't really let you experience Paris nightlife to the fullest, but if you don't mind being glared at when you come in at 5 am, it is something you can get past! Definitely would recommend this hostel to anyone. Great karaoke bar right near by!
