Borneo Global Backpackers is located a short bus ride south of the city centre in the mechanical area and seems to be a converted industrial building, which makes it very spacious. The hostel stretches over two floors, with the first floor being mainly communal and the second housing mainly rooms. It's very clean, well-maintained and seems to be run efficiently and professionally. If you catch the owner, he's incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.
There are a number of communal areas but they seem to be set up in a way not conducive to mingling or socializing. The two kitchens are very basic, really just a kettle and toaster, and have either no seating or very uncomfortable seating. The TV area has big cozy couches and cable TV. Don't be surprised if you walk past the bar and don't realize it's there -- it's really just a fridge of beer.
Most of the dorms are small -- four people and not all the rooms have windows, so just hope that you're not sharing a dorm with someone smelly. There are toilet-shower combos with hot water showers.
Amenities include cheap internet on the one computer, free breakfast (toast and butter), free tea and coffee all day, and free airport pick-up. The walk-in rate can be more than the internet booking rate and if you've used their pick-up service without pre-booking through the internet, you'll end up paying a hefty price for a bed.
