The Sokolska Youth Hostel is a basic place to crash without many of the extras that can be found in other hostels. Prague is a busy place with a huge influx of tourists during the summer, so places like this fill the gap when other options are booked out.
The hostel is very easy to get to from the train station. Take the metro one stop to I.P. Pavlova and out of the metro station go to the first major cross street and turn left. The hostel is on the left side in a building that has "Korea House" on the front and "Puccini Office Centre" next to the door. Walk up two flights of stairs and the hostel is on the first floor. A short walk or tram ride will have you at the main sights of Prague.
Reception is staffed twenty-four hours by a husband and wife team who appear to be the owners. Their English is not great but we assume their Czech and Russian are fine! They are not able to provide a great deal of information other than where to get to the main part of Prague.
Dorms contain four, six, eight, and twelve beds according to the hostel website, but the room we saw was crammed with eight beds in bunk style and then also had a camp bed at one end. The room is about half the size of many similar dorm rooms with the same number of beds. There is no space for luggage storage or individual lockers. Linen provided is clean but the blankets are quite worn and discoloured. Some mattress are quite saggy in the middle.
Showers and toilets are separate and there are two showers and one toilet on each of the two wings of the hostel. The handheld shower pipes were taped with sellotape to stop leaks. The facilities themselves were clean.
The hostel provides tea, coffee, and milk in the hallways along with a small fridge and a microwave. There are no other cooking facilities. A very small common room contains a television, a computer for free internet usage and three chairs squeezed in. The Sokolska Youth Hostel provides the very basics of a hostel and not much more, but for those really counting the Czech crowns, this place fits the bill.
