To get to AAE Amsterdam Amstelzicht Hotel from Amsterdam Central Station, take tram 4 or 9 and get off at Rembrandtplein. Walk towards Three Sisters Pub and take the Bakkerstraat street and follow it to the end, then turn left and you will see the building after one hundred meters. The hostel/hotel is located inside a converted house across from a canal, about a ten-minute walk from the red light district.
You'll enter through a long corridor that is controlled by the front desk by day and locked at night. You'll be issued an electronic key to give you access after hours. Reception is straight ahead, with a small comfy lounge across the way. That is the one and only common area -- leather chairs around a dining room table, with a few scattered chairs as well. This can make it difficult to meet other travelers during your stay. Free wireless is available throughout the building, with free computer terminals downstairs.
The staff at reception are always eager to give advice and directions for the city, and can show you affordable options for dining. There are no cooking facilities at this property, so you'll have to eat in town. There is, however, complimentary coffee and tea in the rooms.
Hotel Amstelzicht has two types of rooms -- the traditional hostel "dorm" type, and private rooms as well. The rooms are well appointed and furnished, and are cleaned every day. All rooms are en-suite, with a "standup" type shower. Towels are provided, as are linens. The beds are comfortable and the sheets are very soft. The stairs are tricky to climb -- they are quite steep and narrow. In an expensive and noisy city, Hotel Amstelzicht is a great place for a quiet rest that won't destroy your budget.
