It's the YHA on the Collaroy beach but the sign actually says Sydney Beachhouse. Getting there by car is easiest. When you see the sign and you're at the corner of Collaroy Street and Pittwater Road, turn left and you're there.
The entrance is simple -- you go there to check in with your payment, get your plastic bowl and cup, bed linen, map, chitchat, and key. Lockers are for sale. There are three floors to this smallish looking hotel and a number of exits to carpark and street. Rooms are clean, beds reasonably comfy, and each level has bathrooms with around three toilet cubicles and three shower cubicles as well -- it's very decent and acceptable.
Level Two is where you find a huge kitchen-dining hall combined with the entertainment area (pool table, couple of arcade games, vending machines, fireplace, some scattered books and newspaper for reading. This hall is separated by glass doors that lead to a BBQ area and small, open air pool. It's quite a refreshing nook within an otherwise unassuming YHA entrance. There are a a couple of TV rooms on the third level and again right outside is a vending machine for chocolates and chips.
Bikes are free for use, although it's first come first serve and only loaned out in daytime for safety reasons apparently. Cross over and there's the beautiful stretch of Collaroy beach. Walk around and nearby is another wonderful hideaway with a great lake view. Alexander Street on the hostel map does not tell you it's actually an uphill walk but then you get to the top, and whew -- what a view!
This YHA is also near great evening entertainment and a famous steakhouse around the corner. There's even a moviehouse, Asian restaurants, and post office just on the same block. It's a great location and there's free parking for hostel guests. The price is pretty fair just as long as you don't expect total peace and quiet because you do hear the other room doors opening and closing, and if you're close to the entertainment area, the sound of pool table shots.
