Port O'Call Lodge is situated about ten minutes' walk from the main town of Port Douglas. There is a free shuttle bus from Cairns that does the rounds of the hostels as long as you stop two nights in Port Douglas. You do not have to have stopped at the YHA in Cairns for the free bus. The free bus will also stop off along the way for photo shoots and takes you a guided tour of the little town before dropping you off at the hostel. Allow two hours from Cairns due to these added extras. The minibus will also drop you off back in Cairns for free, though you must inform reception in advance.
The dorm rooms are spacious -- very much like a hotel room, all en-suite, with lockers if you need them. There is only one bunk bed in the dorm rooms -- the other two beds are singles -- giving it a nice airy feel. Air conditioning is free. The kitchen is spotless with plenty of utensils and pans and pots. However it lacks a social atmosphere somewhat as the dining area, kitchen, and lounge area are all separate. The TV room is small and there are two computers but the computer room closes at 9 p.m.
The hostel has a bar/restaurant where the food is amazing. On arrival each guest will get 30% off their first meal, so you can get a great feast for a great price. The bar/restaurant closes at 9 p.m. At first glance the hostel looks a little like a concentration camp, but what it lacks in layout and facilities closing early, it makes up for in value for money and cleanliness.
