Very warm and friendly hostel metres away from the splendid beaches of Vilankulo and from the view of the Bazaruto Arcipelago. The hosts, Steph and John (two English ex-pats), do all in their might to make you feel welcome and part of the family. So does Molly (the dog).
Dorm and private rooms all gather around the central bar and dining area which works as a meeting place. Showers and toilets are in a separate block encased in a thick bush of ibiscus flowers. Strictly speaking there are no "beds" in the dorm, but big mattresses on the floor lying on strawmats. They all come with linens, pillows and mosquito nets and everything is very clean and neat.
There is no common kitchen, but there are plenty of places to eat in the nearby market, or on the main road of Vilankulo and on the main waterfront a further 10 minutes down the beach. That said, I suggest you stay at the hostel and try Steph's cuisine. She is possibly the best cook south of the Mediterranean.
On the billboard next to the counter there is loads of information about Vilankulo and surrounding areas, including tips on how to "cheaply" go and in and out of Vilankulo (buses and planes with prices and timetable). When you leave early in the morning (the first buses out, either north or south leave at 4:30am), Steph and John arrange it so that you get escorted by one of the night guards (with a torchlight) all the way to the bus station.
