Patey's Place is one of those hostels you stumble across and straight away understand why you've never heard of it -- no one wants to tell you. It's a hidden gem and even from the street you'll find no signage for the hostel.
It really is like staying in someone's house. The living room is very homey and comfortable, complete with premium cable TV (which you'll also get in the private rooms if you're lucky enough to be staying there). The kitchen and laundry areas are clean and well-stocked. Outdoors is also a relaxing place to hang out in the tropical gardens, and there's a BBQ for use of guests.
Dorm rooms are simple but very clean and lack the normal sterile atmosphere that you're probably used to at other hostels (an obvious positive!). The bathrooms are very very clean and possibly the most upmarket you're likely to find in Hawaii. What you won't find here is a wild party atmosphere. Common areas shut at 10 p.m. and after that it's quiet time inside. If you're after a wild party hostel than go elsewhere, but if you're after somewhere to call home and be welcomed by the friendly staff, then stay here. It's not like you can't party in town anyway, the main strip with bars and clubs in Lahaina is only fifty meters away. You'd be hard pressed to find a club that's not open on weekdays either.
From the airport in Maui you can connect to Lahaina for a few dollars. Buses leave every hour and Patey's Place is a quick five-meter walk. Just note the address so you can figure out which place is the hostel! There's heaps of stuff to do nearby and lots of tour operators more than willing to help you out. You'll need some extra money for the key deposit at Patey's Place.
