A century ago, Pitkin was a booming gold-mining town, and the Pitkin Hotel counted the leading political figures of the day among its guests. Today, the 80 or so residents of Pitkin put on an old-fashioned melodrama performance every summer. Enjoy hiking, climbing, skiing, and bicycling. Visit old mine sites and the first tunnel through the Continental Divide. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison, one of the deepest and narrowest canyons in the world, is about 48 miles west of the hostel. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular in the area. The hostel is a 90-minute drive from Crested Butte and Monarch Ski Areas for downhill skiing.

The hostel is in a small town. Bring your food and have gasoline in your car. Hiking and reading and skiing or snowshoeing are the winter activities. Very quiet, laid back atmosphere. Only nice people are invited.
